You can’t manage what you don’t measure
| |
At
Crystalbrook Collection, we’re committed to
minimising environmental impact in a way that doesn’t compromise exceptional
guest experiences. When we look at a process or practice in our business, where
we can make planet-friendly choices without affecting our guests negatively, we
will. This is one of the pillars we built our company on and ‘Travelling
with a lighter footprint’ was born.
‘You
can’t manage what you don’t measure’
In
2022 Crystalbrook Collection partnered with EarthCheck, a certification,
consulting, and advisory group for sustainable
destinations
and tourism. This really kickstarted our comprehensive approach to measuring
and minimising the environmental impact of our operations. Their sustainability
metrics help us to track key performance indicators such as waste generation
and carbon emissions and help us identify areas for improvement..
|
|
|
| | | |
We
integrate sustainability into our leaders’ KPIs and invest in our people
attending ESG events to understand how other industries have innovated. Our
back of house is a source of information for staff to learn, share and
practices to follow which starts the change in habits and knowledge.
We also look beyond our own industry - which historically hasn’t been the most innovative and we challenge our suppliers to bring new ideas and their learnings to us and seek out and preference partnerships with businesses who have shared values of sustainability and the accreditation to support that value.
All of this takes dedication and an ESG team who source, gather and bring to life our brand.

| | TNQ Wildlife Trust brings Christmas Cheer | | | |
| | In discussions with industry and tourism professionals, a common question arises: how can contributions be made to local grassroots projects? This year's Tourism Tropical North Queensland Chairs Award for Excellence winners, Angela and Peter Freeman, provide a shining example. They have brought early Christmas cheer by allocating a record-breaking $75,000 from the locally founded and operated North Queensland Wildlife Trust.
The North Queensland Wildlife Trust (NQWT) was established in 2004 by the Freeman family who own and operate Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures, Kuranda Koala Gardens and Birdworld Kuranda. The Trust is focussed very much on grass roots conservation efforts, hands on wildlife care, critical habitat acquisition, conservation, research and preservation.
At the Freeman attractions, there are easy mechanisms for visitors to make an active contribution to the conservation of native species and local habitats with funds accumulating weekly.
The local project recipients include: Gondwana Rainforest Trust FNQ Wildlife Rescue Kuranda Envirocare Agile Project Wildlife Rescue Bats & Tree Society of Cairns Rainforest Rescue

| | | Compliance with the EU Green Claims Directive | | | |
| |
As the tourism industry, businesses and destinations start to evaluate compliance with the EU Green Claims Directive, when it comes to our socials, advertising and publicity it is crucial to ensure we are not in breach of the Directive. Here are four questions staff should ask before they publish a claim on behalf of your business about your sustainability credentials:
1) Could this claim give a false impression of what is really in place in your business? 2) Can this claim be verified by a third party? 3) Is the claim vague or not able to be substantiated? 4) If your business were asked to verify it could you do so in a timely manner? For example: "TTNQ is the most eco-certified destination in Australia” this claim reflects accurately what we have in our region, it can be verified by the certification bodies, it is not vague and if called to demonstrate this claim TTNQ could do so when asked.
Whereas: “TNQ will be carbon zero by 2030” this claim is unclear because it does not define what ‘carbon zero’ is to be achieved, is it the whole region, just the organisation, scope 1&2 or scope 3, there is no data to even define the current carbon footprint, let alone what is needed to get to carbon zero. Our current footprint and path to reach zero emissions (net) by 2030 is not published or verified, this claim is vague and misleading and cannot be verified in a timely manner.
